willie mays painting (11X14)
Lost Ballparks artist Michael Koser has created a new series of original paintings, "Lost Ballparks Legends" featuring some of baseball's all-time greats.
This item, "The Catch", a painting of Giants legend Willie Mays on an 11x14 wood canvas, is 1 of 1. There is no other like it.
Willie Mays was a 24x All-Star, World Champion (1954), 2x NL MVP, 12x Gold Glove winner, member of MLB's "All Century Team" and Baseball Hall of Fame Class of '79. He finished his remarkable career with .302 lifetime batting average, 3,283 hits, 660 home runs and 338 stolen bases!
This painting, "The Catch", is a recreation of the famous over-the-shoulder catch Willie Mays made in the 1954 World Series. From the Baseball Hall of Fame - "With Game 1 tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth, runners on first and second, and no outs, Vic Wertz hit a towering drive that would have been a home run in most parks. Mays, playing shallow, took off and ran with his back to the ball, caught it over the shoulder an estimated 460 feet from the plate, turned, and fired. Larry Doby, who had to turn back and tag up at second base, was forced to stop at third. The Giants went on to win the game and sweep the Series. “The Catch” is considered by many to be one of the the greatest defensive plays in history."
“If somebody came up and hit .450, stole 100 bases and performed a miracle in the field every day, I’d still look you in the eye and say Willie was better.” – Leo Durocher
"They invented the All-Star Game for Willie Mays." - Ted Williams
