1984 Topps Kirk Gibson - Tiger Stadium Painting
This 1984 Topps Kirk Gibson card has a surprise on the back - an original Lost Ballparks painting of Tiger Stadium in Detroit. The Tigers played at "the Corner" from 1912-1999. Artist Michael Koser always leaves a little bit of the original card visible through the painting, so you will notice Kirk's name just above the CF scoreboard. This item is 1 of 1.
Gibson, a 2X World Series Champion and a former NL MVP hit some of the most memorable home runs in baseball history. Who can forget his 3 run home run in game 5 of the '84 series against Goose Gossage?!!
"You know what’s interesting? Kirk Gibson made his major league debut … His first at-bat in the big leagues against Goose Gossage… That’s a great way to break in… And Gossage struck him out on three pitches … And maybe because of that, Gossage said ‘I can get him.’ … Well, we’ll see…
The infield is up … They give Gibson the left field foul line … Brown is in left… AND THERE IT GOES!" - Vin Scully on the NBC Broadcast
And of course the "improbable" HR he hit (when he could barely walk) in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs in game 1 of the '88 World Series.
Card is ungraded.
